Description
Some time around the turn of this century before I was a professional photographer I saw a shot in some fashion catalog that blew my mind. A woman casually playing golf on a wide flat expanse with an enormous moon around and behind her. It was just a catalog shot, not a work of art, but I remember staring at that shot and I could feel my eyes just getting bigger. It was a stunning shot and it embedded itself into my brain.
Years later when I picked up the camera and started selling artwork, that "moon shot" seemed to rise from the shadows to impress its ethos on me. I found myself being guided by its power. If you look through my work you can find many instances of women surrounded by a large round object behind them, like a halo. These are all inspired by this legendary moon shot.
The weird thing? I only saw that shot once. It was before the digital era. Before social media. I've searched for it many times. Never found it. I'm photographically experienced enough to finally resolve my long running question of whether it was real or fabricated -- I know it had to have been faked. But this was BEFORE PHOTOSHOP! And it blew my mind. All for a casual throw away mailed catalog.
I would love to see that shot again. Maybe now after nearly two decades of photography it wouldn't seem as mind blowing as it did then. Maybe I would see the seams of the edit crudely done by hand and in a dark room as was done in those days. Maybe my mind blew it up into something larger than life and truer than true. Or maybe it would still be out of this world.
