To my shame, I haven't looked at your work in quite a while. Though posted over a year ago, I find this piece really exceptional. It's a well thought out and executed fantasy. In some ways it's reminiscent of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, but on steroids. Great stuff, Dario! -- Joe.

Dario Impini replied:

Hey Joe, thanx for the kind comments. Most of my shots have an interesting story associated with it. In this one, having seen the location I felt it necessary to be there at the very break of dawn to capture the scene which required trudging out there an hour before hand to set up. There was a long walk through a swampy woods to get there, with large scary spiders along the way and snakes as well. I had forgotten my water shoes so I stumbled around on jagged rocks through the water to confirm how I would place the model, then stumbled back to get her. The model herself suffered "numb-butt" as she held pose after pose for 10s of seconds to get a nice time exposure which accounts for the glass like surface of the water and the movement of the boats in the background. Afterward sitting on the beach reviewing the shots, the model notices two snakes swimming out to the rock for their morning warming in the sun. It was a memorable morning and I think well worth the effort.

Artist's Description

"Come on" she nudged me. The alarm had rung as planned - 4am. It seemed possible the night before while surveying this charming rock in the water. Now in a bleary eyed stupor it became a fool's errand. "No" I slurred, "it's not that big a deal." I put my head down but a couple minutes later I thought ok, it really is quite a beautiful scene worthy of the effort.

So we dragged ourselves out of bed, she preened, I packed. Braving a dark trek through a pre-dawn fire swamp filled with spiders, mosquitoes, snakes, sharp sunken rocks, and a case of numb-ass, we managed to make this look incredibly serene. The time exposure smoothed out the early morning waves into a polished sheen.

Afterwards we sat on the shore admiring our haul of shots. She spotted two snakes slithering out to sun themselves on the rock she had been sitting on and gave me a dirty look. I said yeah but look at this shot! Totally worth it right?

About Dario Impini

Dario Impini

Serenity, Beauty, Harmony. In a perennially troubled world an artist has, generally speaking, two options in their creative process: reflect the chaos or wallpaper over it. I have trouble imagining my living space decorated with turbulent images of despair and misery. Doesn't enough of the outside world invade one's life despite our best intentions? Instead I offer images that inspire something more serene and calming to the soul. Visual anesthetic if you will. Imbued in me during my formative years was an amalgam of form and function that was definitive '60s and '70s. A focus on the yin yang of feminine flowing curves and masculine angles permeated that time span. It was the era of the road-borne starship Lamborghini, the...
